What GCs, developers and owners should look for when hiring a commercial drywall subcontractor in San Antonio: capacity, insurance, quality and communication.

The cheapest drywall number on bid day isn't always the cheapest job. A subcontractor who can't staff the project, misses details on rated walls, or leaves a long punch list can cost a general contractor far more than the difference in price. Here's what to look at before you award the drywall package.
Ask how many hangers, tapers and finishers the company can put on your job, and what else they have running at the same time. A sub that's stretched thin will bounce crews between sites, and your schedule pays for it. Look for a contractor that can scale up for a push and still keep a steady foreman on site.
Medical offices, schools, retail, restaurants and multi-family buildings each come with their own requirements. Ask for examples of similar projects and the kinds of assemblies they've built: rated corridors, shaft walls, sound-rated partitions, acoustical ceilings or high-end Level 5 finishes.
Before anyone steps on site, get certificates of insurance showing general liability and workers' compensation coverage, with your company named as required by your contract. Ask about the company's safety program: fall protection on lifts and scaffolds, silica dust control during cutting and sanding, and daily housekeeping.
Photos online always look good. Ask to walk a recently finished space, ideally one with large windows or long corridors where side lighting shows every flaw in the wall. Look at:
The best bids are detailed: board types by area, finish levels, textures, ceilings, inclusions and exclusions. A vague bid leaves room for change orders later. See our guide on what GCs should expect from bid to final walkthrough.
Most schedule problems come down to someone not knowing something in time. Look for a single point of contact who answers the phone, shows up to coordination meetings, and flags areas that aren't ready before the crew mobilizes, not after.
A San Antonio drywall contractor knows how the local humidity affects drying times, which suppliers can deliver on short notice, and how inspections typically run with local building officials. That local experience removes a lot of friction.

Not automatically. Compare scope line by line, and weigh crew capacity, quality and communication. A low bid with gaps often turns into change orders.
Walk a recently finished project, preferably with strong side lighting from windows. Joints, corners and texture tell you more than photos.
