How Acoustical Ceilings Are Installed: From Layout to Final Tile

Step-by-step look at how a suspended acoustical ceiling is installed: layout, wall molding, hanger wires, mains, cross tees, fixtures and final tile.

Key Takeaways

  • A good ceiling starts with a balanced layout so border tiles aren't tiny slivers.
  • Wall molding is set level around the room at the finished ceiling height.
  • Hanger wires and main runners carry the grid; cross tees complete the modules.
  • Tile goes in last, after above-ceiling work and inspections are done.

A suspended acoustical ceiling looks simple, but a level, balanced, clean ceiling takes planning. Here's how professional crews install one.

1. Plan the Layout

Installers start with the reflected ceiling plan and measure the room. The goal is a balanced layout: the grid is centered so border tiles on opposite walls are the same size and not narrow slivers. Light fixtures, diffusers, sprinklers and speakers are located on the plan so they land correctly in the grid.

2. Set the Height

The finished ceiling height comes from the drawings. A laser level marks that height around the perimeter, accounting for clearance above for ducts, pipes and fixtures.

3. Install Wall Molding

Angle molding is fastened around the room at the laser line. It must be level and straight, since it supports the edges of the grid and is the first thing people notice.

4. Hang the Wires

Hanger wires are attached to the structure above and spaced along each main runner line, commonly every 4 feet, following the manufacturer's instructions and installation standards. Wires attach to the structure, not to ducts, pipes or conduit. Light fixtures and heavier items usually get their own support wires.

5. Set the Main Runners

Main tees are hung on the wires, typically 4 feet apart, and leveled. They're spliced end to end across the room and cut to fit at the walls.

6. Install Cross Tees

Cross tees lock into the mains to form 2x4 modules, or 2x2 with additional tees. The grid is checked for square, because an out-of-square grid makes tiles hard to install and look crooked.

7. Coordinate Above-Ceiling Work

With the grid in place, electricians set light fixtures, HVAC installs diffusers, and fire protection adjusts sprinkler heads to the grid. Above-ceiling inspections happen before the ceiling is closed.

8. Drop In Tiles

Full tiles go in first, then border tiles are cut to fit. Clean hands or gloves keep tiles from getting fingerprints. Tegular tiles need careful cutting to recreate the edge detail at the walls.

9. Final Walkthrough

The crew checks for level, straight lines, consistent border tiles, clean cuts and damaged tiles, and replaces any that are stained or chipped.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far apart are ceiling grid hanger wires?

Commonly about every 4 feet along the main runners, following the manufacturer's instructions and installation standards.

Why are my ceiling's border tiles so small?

The grid wasn't balanced in the room. A centered layout keeps border tiles even and a reasonable size.

When should ceiling tiles be installed?

After lights, diffusers, sprinklers and above-ceiling inspections are complete, so tiles don't get damaged or moved repeatedly.
