How to tell whether water-damaged drywall can be dried and repaired or needs to be cut out and replaced after a storm, leak or flood in San Antonio.

Heavy storms, roof leaks, burst pipes and AC drain overflows are all common causes of water-damaged drywall in San Antonio. Once the water stops, the big question is whether the wall or ceiling can be saved or needs to be replaced.
For major water events, a professional water mitigation company can measure moisture inside the walls and dry them properly.
In these cases, the area can be dried, sealed with a stain-blocking primer, touched up and repainted. Small soft spots can be cut out and patched.
When floodwater gets into a home, contractors often make a "flood cut," removing drywall in a straight line above the water line, commonly a couple of feet above the highest point the water reached. This allows the wall cavity to dry and wet insulation to be removed, and makes a clean line to patch back to.
Once everything is dry and any mold has been properly addressed, new drywall goes up. In areas likely to see moisture again, such as bathrooms, laundry rooms and areas near exterior doors, consider mold-resistant drywall. Then the seams are finished, the texture is matched, and the wall is primed and painted.

Mold can begin to grow within a day or two in warm, humid conditions, so drying quickly is important.
If the board is firm, dry and mold-free, it can often be sealed with a stain-blocking primer and repainted.
Drywall soaked by floodwater or outside runoff should generally be removed because the water is contaminated.
