Medium vs. Heavy Monterrey: San Antonio's Most Popular Wall Texture Explained

What Monterrey drag texture is, how medium and heavy Monterrey differ, and why it's so popular in San Antonio homes and businesses.

Key Takeaways

  • Monterrey is sprayed on, then flattened with a single pass of a wide, flexible blade.
  • Medium Monterrey has a large splatter pattern with low relief and is SCCI's most popular finish.
  • Heavy Monterrey has a denser, fuller pattern with more coverage.
  • Both hide minor wall imperfections well, which makes them practical in busy homes.

If you've lived in a newer home in San Antonio, there's a good chance your walls have some version of Monterrey texture. It's one of the most requested finishes in South Texas, and medium Monterrey is the most popular finish SCCI Drywall applies. Here's what it is and how to choose between medium and heavy.

What Is Monterrey Texture?

Monterrey, sometimes called Monterrey drag, is a sprayed texture with a flattened top. The process has two steps:

  1. Spray: joint compound is machine-sprayed onto the wall in a heavy splatter pattern.
  2. Drag: once the compound sets slightly, a finisher wipes across it in a single pass with a smooth, flexible blade, sometimes called a paint shield or knockdown knife.

The blade flattens the high points of each splatter, leaving smooth, irregular "islands" with low relief. It's closely related to the knockdown textures used in other parts of the country, and Monterrey is the name you'll hear most often in Texas.

Medium Monterrey

Medium Monterrey has a large splatter pattern with low relief and plenty of the smooth wall showing between the islands. It's subtle and clean, which is why it's our most popular finish. It suits:

  • Living areas and bedrooms in new and remodeled homes
  • Offices and commercial spaces that want some texture without a rustic look
  • Rooms with a lot of natural light, where a heavier pattern can look busy

Heavy Monterrey

Heavy Monterrey is characterized by a much denser pattern than medium. The splatters are fuller and cover more of the surface, so less flat wall shows through. It has more character and a slightly more traditional, Southwestern feel. It suits:

  • Large rooms and high walls where a light texture can look flat
  • Homes with Spanish, Mediterranean or Hill Country styling
  • Walls with minor imperfections, since the heavier coverage hides more

Why Monterrey Is So Popular in San Antonio

  • Forgiving: it hides small dents, joint lines and minor waviness better than a smooth wall.
  • Durable look: scuffs and fingerprints are less noticeable than on smooth walls.
  • Repairable: an experienced finisher can patch and re-texture a section to blend in. See our guide to matching an existing wall texture.
  • Regional style: it fits the look of many South Texas homes.

Medium or Heavy: How to Decide

  • Want a clean, modern look? Medium.
  • Want more character or have tall, open walls? Heavy.
  • Matching existing walls in a remodel? Match whatever is already there.
  • Planning glossy paint? Consider a lighter texture or smooth wall, since gloss highlights texture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Monterrey texture the same as knockdown?

They're closely related. Both are sprayed and then flattened with a blade. Monterrey is the name most commonly used in Texas, and the exact look depends on the finisher's technique.

Which Monterrey texture hides imperfections best?

Heavy Monterrey, because its denser pattern covers more of the wall surface.

Can Monterrey texture be patched?

Yes. An experienced finisher can patch drywall and re-spray and drag the texture so the repair blends in.
