Orange peel is one of the most versatile drywall textures there is. It's subtle, clean and practical, and it works in everything from offices to bedrooms. SCCI Drywall applies two versions: standard and light orange peel.
Orange peel is created by spraying thinned joint compound onto the wall with a hopper gun and air compressor. The compound lands in fine droplets that dry into a gently bumpy surface that looks, as the name says, like the skin of an orange. Unlike Monterrey, it isn't flattened with a blade afterward.
The look is controlled by how thick the compound is, the air pressure and the spray tip size, so an experienced finisher can dial in exactly the density you want.
Standard orange peel has a soft, uniform appearance that works well in virtually any drywall application. It adds just enough texture to hide minor imperfections and give walls some depth without drawing attention. It's a strong choice for:
Light orange peel is a variation with a lighter, less dense appearance. From a few feet away, it reads almost like a smooth wall, but it still softens light and hides small flaws better than a true smooth finish. It's popular for:
Because orange peel is a light texture, the wall underneath needs a good finish. Joints and fasteners should be properly finished, typically to a Level 4 standard, before spraying. Heavier textures can hide more, but orange peel shows flaws in the finishing underneath.
