What skim coating is, when it's better than patching, and how it fixes torn paper, wallpaper damage, uneven walls and texture changes in San Antonio homes.

Sometimes a wall has so many problems that patching them one by one would take longer, cost more and still look uneven. That's when a skim coat makes sense.
A skim coat is a thin layer of joint compound applied over an entire surface, then smoothed and sanded. Usually it takes two or more thin coats. The result is a uniform, flat surface ready for texture or paint. A full skim coat over new drywall is what makes a Level 5 finish.
If the board itself is soft, water-damaged, moldy or crumbling, skimming won't fix it. Replacement is the answer. See repair or replace drywall? and water-damaged drywall.
Skimming looks simple but is hard to do flat and even across a whole wall. Ridges, lap marks and uneven spots show up once the paint goes on, especially under side lighting. Most homeowners find it's worth hiring a finisher.
SCCI Drywall skims walls and ceilings after wallpaper removal, popcorn removal and years of wear, then retextures or finishes smooth. Call (210) 875-0280.
